The evil and cunning oil baron J.R. Ewing spent the first three seasons being horrible to his wife, deceptive to his family and backstabbing, cheating and double crossing his friends and business partners.  While working in his office late one night the scoundrel is gunned down by a mysterious assailant.  The episode ended with the questions: Would the terrible J.R. survive and who pulled the trigger?
